Dhobhi Ghat-The worlds largest open air Laundry

On 9th Jan 2011,me and one of my flickr friend went to capture the dhobi ghat, not only we got a glimpse of worlds largest open air laundry we were amazed with the facts that a friendly guy told us.

So here are some facts:

Mumbai’s dhobis (more than 600 dhobi families work together here) relentlessly pound the dirt from the city’s garments in a timeless tradition. Known as the world’s largest outdoor laundry, Dhobi Ghat is where Mumbai’s traditional washer folk — or dhobis — provide a wonderful service, collecting dirty laundry, washing it, and returning it neatly pressed, all for a very small fee. Stubborn stains are removed by soaking garments in a boiling vat of caustic soda; drying takes place on long, brightly colored lines; and heavy wood-burning irons are used for pressing.

Established by Britishers there are more than 10,000 people working in 700 washing platforms.

Those Dhobis work from 4 am till 7 pm in the evening 365 days a year without holiday.

They have an efficient marking/indexing system, they don’t mix one clients cloths with others.

They literally live in the constant caustic chemical which results in tearing of there hands and feet skin, every 6 months they need to get a antiseptic injection shot.

They pay goverment taxes.

Like many of us they worship there workplace in the morning.

It was a great photo opportunity, but i came home with so much knowledge about this place.
